SITUATIONProposal Name: growing bioplastic Initiated By: name Submission date: date Background: The photosynthetic marine acheaobacterium Rhodopsuedomomas synthesises the bioplastic PHB (polyhydroxybutrylate) under conditions of food stress. PHB can be up to 56% of the dry weight of the bacteria, can can be harvested by bursting the filtered bacteria with fresh water then washing and filtering with hot water and alcohol. PHB is a useful bioplastic - it can be cast, 3d-printed, or softened in boiling water and used as a sealant or caulking material. It can be readily re-melted and recycled, or composted with other organic materials. Being able to grow PHB plastic in bottles on the deck of a boat (or the roof of a remote cabin) sounds rather useful. PHB can also be used to produce synthetic diesel. Being a marine organism, Rhodopsuedomomas loves salt water. Maximum PHB yields are produced when Rhodopsuedomomas has an excess of carbon and nitrogen but a shortage of phosphorus. Human urine is admirably suited to providing the required ratio of N/P, in bioavailable form. Carbon can be sourced from the atmosphere, or carbon compounds could be added in solution for faster growth. Rhodopsuedomomas does not like sugar, but does like acetates (from vinegar?). Further research required. More to follow Summary of proposed changes: order Rhodopsuedomomas culture. Recruit my sister. Brew Rhodopsuedomomas under various conditions. Harvest and extract in various ways. Weigh. Use to fix stuff. Test. Write up results.
